John and Katrina have a passion for travel and food. They went backpacking on honeymoon to Myanmar (Burma) because John’s grandmother was Burmese, and it was one of the countries they had not been to in South East Asia. The trip proved inspirational. While trekking through the remote hills of the Shan State they encountered local Myanmar dishes cooked using sesame and peanut oil, and saw the abundance of crops grown naturally without the use of pesticides.
They passed many schools on their trek and witnessed the lack of resources – and the local children’s excitement at receiving the simple notepads and pencils that John and Katrina gave them.
An idea began to form: if they brought sesame and peanut oil from Myanmar to Europe, they could help the farmers sell their goods internationally whilst giving back to local schools in the form of resources.
